Cryptocoryne aponogetifolia Merrill

Named for its impressive sweeping leaves that resemble the foliage of Aponogeton plants (which though aquatic, are not related and grow from bulbs instead of rhizomes), C. aponogetifolia is suited for large tanks with good current and space for the nearly 1 m long leaves to unfurl and flap as they do in their native rivers.

Found only in the northern islands of the Philippines, C. aponogetifolia bears strongly bullate, bright green leaves and an inflorescence with a very long tube and disproportionately short limb, which together can reach nearly 50 cm. Cultivation in moderately hard water and relatively cool temperatures (up to 28°C) is recommended. The plants can be placed in a coarse substrate and propagate rapidly via runners once established. Moderate light is sufficient.
